Spanish Curriculum Intent
At Carclaze, all children learn Spanish in Key Stage 2. Our intent is to:
Set high expectations for all pupils as they build a secure foundation in language learning.
Teach children how languages work, developing confidence with Spanish phonics, vocabulary and grammar through a clear, progressive sequence.
Foster curiosity about other countries and cultures, helping pupils recognise and celebrate the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
Encourage pupils to see themselves as global citizens who value communication, intercultural understanding and lifelong language learning.
Strengthen pupils’ memory, confidence, oracy and cultural awareness through purposeful language learning that enriches the wider curriculum.
Ensure pupils acquire and apply new vocabulary and skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in a range of engaging, age-appropriate contexts.
Lessons aim to be active, lively and inclusive. Pupils encounter authentic resources including stories, songs, games, cultural material and age-appropriate texts. As they grow in confidence, pupils move from simple oral responses to writing phrases, sentences and short paragraphs with increasing accuracy and independence.
Spanish Curriculum Implementation
Carclaze School follows the Language Angels scheme of work to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum and a clear progression of skills throughout KS2. The scheme incorporates the three pillars of language learning—phonics, vocabulary and grammar—and builds these gradually across Early Language, Intermediate and Progressive units.
Teachers use Language Angels planning, unit glossaries, phonics lessons, knowledge organisers and high-quality interactive resources to deliver structured and well-sequenced lessons.
Curriculum coverage provides a balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing, with retrieval opportunities embedded in every lesson to support memory and long-term retention.
All children are introduced to Spanish from Year 3 and receive weekly lessons.
SEND pupils are supported through multisensory approaches, visual scaffolds, chunked tasks, clear routines and differentiated activities, including SEND-friendly resources provided by Language Angels.
Greater depth opportunities are built in through challenge tasks, independent vocabulary application, and extended oral and written responses.
Classroom teachers and the MFL Lead work collaboratively to ensure consistency across year groups.
Staff receive ongoing support from the Language Angels platform, guidance documents and CPD materials.
Spanish vocabulary and simple classroom language are reinforced across the school day to promote regular exposure and everyday use.
Impact
Our MFL curriculum ensures that pupils leave Carclaze with the linguistic foundations and cultural awareness expected at the end of KS2. Pupils will:
Understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish from a range of authentic sources.
Develop increasing confidence, fluency and independence in speaking Spanish, asking and answering questions and improving pronunciation through strong phonics teaching.
Be able to write words, phrases and short texts for different purposes using the grammatical structures taught.
Develop an appreciation of stories, songs and cultural traditions from Spanish-speaking countries.
Recognise that Spanish is spoken worldwide and understand the value of languages in connecting communities across different cultures.
Strengthen transferable skills such as decoding, memorisation, pattern-spotting, critical thinking and problem-solving.
Develop a positive attitude towards language learning and feel prepared for the transition to KS3.
Assessment is ongoing through observation, questioning, vocabulary recall, written outcomes and end-of-unit review tasks. Pupil voice, book looks, and learning walks help the MFL Lead monitor strengths, celebrate success and identify next steps in curriculum development.
