Religion and World Views (RE) Curriculum – Intent

At Carclaze, Religion and World Views is taught in line with the current Cornwall Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, with Opening Worlds used in Key Stage 2 to provide a coherent, knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced curriculum.

We believe that Religion and World Views should provoke challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human. Our curriculum is designed to develop a deep interest in world views and a secure body of knowledge that enables pupils to engage confidently, constructively and reflectively in a religiously diverse world.

Our diverse, culturally rich and wide-scoping curriculum embraces global and cultural breadth, while recognising and valuing the uniqueness and background of every child. Through well-told stories, explicit links to creativity, and carefully planned learning, pupils explore both religious and non-religious perspectives and the ways in which these shape individuals, communities and societies.

Children at Carclaze will have the opportunity to:

    • Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs through rich storytelling and enquiry
    • Understand the impact and significance of beliefs on individuals, communities and cultures, both locally and globally
    • Develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal religions represented in Great Britain and the wider world
    • Explore how religious traditions have shaped the identity of Cornwall and beyond
    • Make connections between beliefs, practices and ideas, including reflecting on and developing their own personal views
    • Engage with different lenses through which Religion and World Views can be interpreted, encouraging curiosity, discussion and respectful debate
    • Develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about key questions and ethical issues

     Implementation

Religion and World Views is taught in accordance with the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus (2020–2025), with Opening Worlds supporting delivery in Key Stage 2 to ensure a rigorous, coherent and knowledge-rich approach.

Learning is structured through weekly lessons, often delivered in half-term blocks, and carefully sequenced to build knowledge, concepts and vocabulary over time. Teaching is underpinned by strong subject knowledge, clear progression and high expectations for all learners.

Explicit links to storytelling, discussion and creativity are used to engage pupils and deepen understanding. A range of enrichment and enhancement opportunities support learning, enabling children to apply their knowledge in purposeful and meaningful ways.

Work is recorded in project books and evidenced through a variety of outcomes, including written work, artwork, discussion and practical activities.

By the end of Year 6, pupils will have developed a secure understanding of the beliefs, teachings and practices of major world religions, with a particular focus on Christianity. They will also have had opportunities to reflect on their own beliefs and values, supported through assemblies and links with personal development.

Pupils develop key disciplinary skills such as investigation, interpretation, reflection, empathy, evaluation, analysis, application, expression and collaboration.

Religious Education (RE) Curriculum - Impact

    Impact

The impact of Religion and World Views is seen through pupils who are curious, reflective and able to engage thoughtfully with different beliefs and perspectives.

    Impact is monitored through:

    • Learning conversations, where pupils speak confidently about their learning
    • Lesson visits and ongoing monitoring
    • Evidence in books and through practical outcomes
    • Assessment opportunities including self, peer and teacher assessment
    • Targeted questioning to deepen understanding

Pupils leave Carclaze with a strong foundation of knowledge, an appreciation of diversity, and the ability to think critically and respectfully about Religion and World Views.

Parents and carers who wish to withdraw their child from all or part of Religion and World Views lessons should contact the school directly to discuss arrangements.
