Personal Development

At Carclaze Community Primary School our aim is to open the door to the world beyond our town for our children. We want children who leave Carclaze to have a sense of place and to be full of knowledge and wonder for the world they live in, ready to take on challenges with confidence and pride.

Carclaze Community Primary School provides a wide range of activities and experiences aimed at capturing children’s talents and interests. Personal development is taught in a range of ways throughout the children’s school journey. For example:

  • in discrete lessons (please see the PSHE curriculum, including coverage of British Values and SMSC).
  • through cross-curricular links in other lessons.
  • through weekly Picture News sessions.
  • in assemblies and workshops: guest speakers, role-playing, and interactive activities.
  • by encouraging positive leadership among pupils through roles such as head pupils, school councillors, House captains, class responsibilities.
  • by celebrating diversity: embracing cultural differences and promoting inclusivity.
  • by specialist staff working with individuals and groups.
  • in online safety lessons in computing and assembly.
  • by celebrating positive learning attributes daily and with weekly certificates.
  • in the range of extra-curricular clubs on offer.
  • through well thought through transitions throughout the school and beyond.
  • by focusing on mental and physical health.
  • through outdoor activities, visits and residentials.
  • through the introduction of Lyfta StoryWorlds for Citizenship.
  • through residentials and trips.
  • through Positive Footprints careers and aspirations project.
  • through a new annual careers fair.
  • through an intentionally designed curriculum that exposes learners to different lives, people, careers and opportunities.
  • through the careful tracking of children's experiences at Carclaze.

Carclaze values: Care, Communicate, Persevere, Sparkle

At Carclaze, our values of Care, Communicate, Persevere and Sparkle are at the heart of everything we do, shaping the way we learn, behave and belong as a community. Rooted in our motto, Curious Minds, Kind Hearts, Bright Futures, these values are lived out daily through our routines, relationships and curriculum. We celebrate and revisit our values regularly through focused teaching, assemblies and shared language, ensuring that children understand what each value looks like in action and can demonstrate it both in school and beyond.

CARE
At Carclaze, we care about our world, our learning, each other, our families, our community and ourselves. Children learn to show kindness, responsibility and respect in all that they do. Through strong relationships and a nurturing environment, pupils understand the importance of looking after one another and taking pride in their school.

COMMUNICATE
We place great importance on oracy and expression. Children are supported to speak clearly, listen carefully and share their ideas with confidence. Through approaches such as speaking in full sentences, making eye contact and articulating their thinking, pupils learn that communication helps them to learn, connect and succeed.

PERSEVERE
At Carclaze, we encourage children to keep going, even when learning feels challenging. Pupils understand that making mistakes is part of learning and that effort and determination lead to success. Through consistent routines and high expectations, children build resilience and take pride in their progress.

SPARKLE
We celebrate individuality, creativity and achievement. Children are encouraged to take pride in their work, show enthusiasm and let their unique qualities shine. Whether in the classroom, on the playground or within the wider community, our pupils are supported to ‘sparkle’ and make a positive difference.

New Summer 2026 *Lyfta*

We are very excited to introduce Lyfta as a whole-school approach to strengthen our focus on citizenship and personal development. Through real-life stories and immersive experiences from around the world, Lyfta helps pupils explore identity, diversity and community, while developing empathy, respect and critical thinking. This work supports our commitment to promoting British Values and deepening pupils’ understanding of protected characteristics, helping them to grow into thoughtful, inclusive and responsible citizens. We will gradually begun to introduce this to assemblies and learning across the Summer Term, eventually visiting Lyfta time weekly.

Money Sense

In summer, we take part in NatWest MoneySense to ensure all pupils develop strong foundations in financial literacy. The programme helps children understand money in real-life contexts — from saving and spending to budgeting and making informed choices — in an engaging and age-appropriate way. By revisiting this learning every year, we build pupils’ confidence and independence with money over time, supporting their personal development and preparing them with essential life skills for the future.

Picture News

Throughout the year, we use Picture News as part of our weekly assemblies to support pupils’ understanding of the world around them and to strengthen learning in citizenship and personal development. Using carefully selected, age-appropriate news stories, pupils explore current events, ethical issues and different viewpoints, while developing critical thinking, discussion skills and respect for others. These regular assemblies help build awareness, empathy and a strong understanding of British Values, preparing pupils to engage thoughtfully with life in modern Britain and the wider world. Picture News also provides high-quality opportunities for digital literacy and critical thinking and analysis around points of view and the authenticity and neutrality of sources of information online. We believe this is hugely important for children growing up in a world where artifical intelligence can make almost anything seem true.

Positive Footprints Aspirations Project

In the summer term of Year 6, pupils take part in the Positive Footprints Aspirations Project, which is designed to raise aspirations and support a confident transition to secondary school. Through workshops and real-life encounters, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, explore future pathways and develop self-belief, resilience and ambition. This project supports our commitment to personal development and helps pupils leave us with a positive mindset and high aspirations for their next stage of learning.

Pupil responsibilities

At Carclaze, we believe it is important to give learners a range of responsibilities to help them grow as individuals. As such, our pupils are given the opportunity to lead in a variety of ways including being Reading Ambassadors, School Ambassadors (School Council), Year 6 prefects and taking on roles and responsibilities in class. We believe this helps instil in our learners a sense of belonging and commitment and develops wider skills.
